eastcontemporary is dedicated to the research, development, and support of international artists through exhibitions, public programs and partnerships. Founded in Milan in 2020 as a non-profit project space, it quickly evolved into a contemporary art gallery (2021) with a specific focus on providing a global perspective on the Central and Eastern European art scene, and most recently, also on other regions historically and culturally influenced by the former Soviet Union, including Southeastern Europe and Central Asia.
Our mission is to contribute to the international recognition and greater visibility of artists from these regions. It is not, however, an attempt to reorient the gaze towards this subject only, but rather to create a tangible bridge between often distant artistic communities.
Committed to fostering creativity, the gallery provides artists with opportunities to research and develop career-defining projects. In recent years, we established an international platform for represented artists. We hosted the first solo exhibitions in Italy of Pakui Hardware, Slavs and Tatars and Barbara Wesolowska, while collaborating with a diverse range of voices, including, Nour Jaouda, Stanislava Kovalcikova, Nikita Kadan, Agata Ingarden, Selma Selman or Katja Novitskova.
The public program is an important part of eastcontemporary’s mission. We recently organized a talk with an author of the book “Poor but Sexy: Culture Clashes in Europe East and West”, a stand-up comedy show of Mila Panic at the gallery, a DJ set of Stach Szumski at Radio Raheem, a series of online readings and a performative talk by Slavs and Tatars at Spazio Maiocchi in collaboration with SPRINT—Independent Publishers and Artists' Books Salon in Milan.
The gallery participates in international art fairs and has received several awards, including: Opening by Allianz Award (ARCO 2022) for the best presentation. Jury: Yina Jimenez, (Curator at large, Caribbean Art Initiative), Adeena Mey (Afterall Managing Editor), Claudia Segura (MACBA Barcelona) and Bernardo Mosqueira (ISLAA New Museum) and Diana Bracco Award for Women Art Entrepreneurs (Artissima 2024) honoring an emerging female gallerist with a strong attachment to scientific research and artistic quality. Jury: Isabella Bortolozzi (Founder, Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi, Berlin); Giovanna Forlanelli (President, Fondazione Luigi Rovati); Chiara Parisi (Director, Centre Pompidou, Metz).
